"turn the page"
As I contemplate two events of last week, and the political implications, three words continue to reverberate in the echo chamber of the vacuum between my ears considered by most to be the brain: “turn the page.” Understandably, Bob Seger originally “coined” the phrase when he wrote his iconic song: Turn the page. His reminiscences of life on the road as a musician, whereas the phrase has now been highjacked to stand for a political philosophy. Only, I wonder, does anyone really understand the possible implications thereof of “turning the page?”
So, to clarify my thought process, last week, those two events included two losers: WE THE PEOPLE and the Constitution. Except, on the debate front, there was one clear winner: Kamala Harris. She cast the hook; Donald Trump took the bait. In doing so, his arrogance overwhelmed his ability to control his mouth. So, on that front, the Republican party lost “bigly,” where the Democrat mopped the floor with Trump’s hairdo. And isn’t that the nature of politics? Throw the opponent off while promising any over-the-top wish list that would make Santa blush for being cheap. You know, Christmas morning arrives, and: All I get is this! Damn, Timmy got that! I want what he has! Thus, when one side is off-balance, the only thing able to stand in the way of “turning the page” politically by the other side: One’s base of constitutional knowledge or lack thereof to “fact check.” Only, during the debate, the only one of the two debaters being “fact checked,” was Donald Trump. A three-sided beat down in the ability to “turn the page” to a blank page. Why listen to their words?
And why is there never in any debate a mention of the Constitution unless it’s politically expedient. Wouldn’t one want to cite Article/Section/Clause to prove their point and be constitutionally on target. Or, has the Constitution become a byword? Only used when attempting to claim another is the threat to “democracy” while the one’s proclaiming such are in truth the threat. Yet, who cares when the Constitution has no relevance in politics today. Better still, who even knows or understands what is or is not at threat of extinction. Evident by WE THE PEOPLE, who have forgone any constitutional knowledge for the promise of “turn the page,” bringing forth the new path forward. And those eagerly accepting the unknown path have no idea what that path will be, but hang on to the promised handouts, while the national debt grows exponentially. The promise to continually spend while never mentioning the need to control said spending or the debt. The vicious cycle of truth versus prevarication and what can be done to make one look like the other. Just dumb the populace enough to where the promise of money and wealth obscures the ability to see the deceptions taking place. Only, who cares. Because, to win, it’s Party over the Constitution.
Now, the second event in those two days of vacuum sucking brain matter and my desire to understand the why. The 10th being the debate, and the 11th of September the remembrance of 9/11, to include the holocaust of death and destruction in downtown NYC, Washington D.C. and a field in Pennsylvania, including another war that enveloped America for generations. I mean, that day (9/11) was twenty-three years ago. So, if I combine another historical event, generations apart, Vietnam cost the nation 56,000 plus of its youth who died there supposedly preserving democracy. Except, that war was based completely on a lie perpetrated on WE THE PEOPLE to enrich a war machine, the likes never before witnessed in the world. Yet, during President Obama’s second term, didn’t he proclaim Vietnam was a long time ago and time to move on? And hell’s bells, I at least guess the ensuing war over 9/11 only cost the country about 7,000 service members lives in the aftermath, not including those who also perished that fateful day. Cheap, if one considers those who made even better bank than Vietnam in this new war. So, based on political expediency, isn’t it now time to move on twenty-three years later? Only, throw in the “Patriot Act,” another result of 9/11, and WE THE PEOPLE, including the Constitution took a bigger hit of epic proportions. All in the name of safety while preserving “democracy.”
So, let’s close. Today there are a host of issues on the ballot depending on which Party one votes for. Each side having their talking points to sway the voter to the side which best provides answers to the wish list of promises, that if done constitutionally, are unachievable. Or better, not give-able. Yet, if the Constitution can be cast aside, more can be given by the Party that takes control nationally. And all it takes is an electorate willing to not understand the power its been entrusted to maintain. In that vein, isn’t indolence the better part of valor? But the bottom-line: Who gives a tinker’s damn about our kids, their futures, the national debt, or a democratic republic. It’s about what I can get now and for how long before the whole thing implodes. I get it: It’s my body, my choice. Only, that is, until it’s something the government should force on everyone because it might affect another personally. I guess that also depends on who gets to call life, life. So, let’s “turn the page,” forget past words, make up lies about the rest and push that new path forward, never understanding: That once autarchy is achieved, it’s just as easy to take as it is to give. And believe this: That day is coming, only the serpent may be a surprise.
